Training and Experience

Erin Cheers attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 2006 with a BA in Accounting. After working in the business world for a few years, she chose to pursue her true passion in medicine and mental health. Dr. Cheers completed a pre-medicine post-baccalaureate certificate program at Northwestern University in Chicago from 2009-2010. She then attended medical school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska from 2011-2015. Dr. Cheers went on to serve as a Psychiatry resident at UW-Madison beginning in 2015, and was voted the Psychiatry Resident of the Year by medical students in 2017! She later served as a Co-Chief for the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at UW-Madison and completed training in 2021. She is a board-certified diplomat of the National Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is board-eligible for the NBME Child and Adolescent specialty certification.


Dr. Cheers is truly passionate about treating patients with mental health concerns and offering diagnostic assessment and treatment plans. She specializes in medication initiation, maintenance and discontinuation with a goal to provide excellent care utilizing the least number of medications and lowest doses necessary to achieve optimal results. She offers limited psychotherapy and has experience with all ages of patients struggling with (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, interpersonal and relationship issues, obsessive and compulsive difficulties, affective disorders, thought disorders and issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.


Dr. Cheers also has a special interest in helping patients with global developmental delays, intellectual and physical differences and medically complex children and adults with mental health concerns. She has experience working with all ages in both in-patient, out-patient and partial hospitalization or intensive therapy scenarios. She is a member of the AMA, WPA, AACAP, APA and is an alum of the WPA Board of Physicians as a Fellow Trainee member from 2019-2021.
